Fishing Guide

Fishing is one of the first hobbies you'll run into in Heartopia, and one of the deepest once you dig in. This guide covers what a fish's shadow tells you before you even cast, how star quality and mastery work, what Shoals and Sea Fishing add on top of everyday fishing, and a quick-reference table for the basics.

How Fishing Works

Spot a Shadow
Watch the water for movement
Cast
Land the buoy on the shadow
Watch the Bite
React when it ripples
Reel It In
Ease off when the line runs hot
Check the Tier
See what star quality you landed

Casting is a long-press โ€” how long you hold it decides how far the buoy travels, and landing it right on top of a fish's shadow matters far more than casting often. Once a fish notices the buoy the water ripples; react to that bite and you move into the reel, where the line's color tells you how much tension it's under. Ease off the moment it runs hot rather than fighting it the whole way in.

๐Ÿ’ก Fishing is available from early on โ€” Vanya introduces the basics down by the water, no long unlock chain required.

Reading the Water

A fish's shadow is a clue before you've caught anything โ€” size and color both hint at what's on the other end.

Small Shadow

The most common shadow you'll see โ€” usually an easy, low-tier catch.

Medium Shadow

A step up in rarity and sell value over a small shadow.

Large Shadow

Bigger fish, better payout โ€” worth prioritizing when you spot one.

Gold Shadow

An uncommon, valuable shadow worth casting for whenever it appears.

Blue Shadow

The rarest shadow color โ€” it only shows up while a Mermaid Fish Attractor is active (see the gear section below).

โš ๏ธ Treat this as a rough guide, not a guarantee โ€” it's a hint about what you're casting for, not a lock on the outcome.

Star Quality & Mastery

Every fish can come in anywhere from 1โ˜… to 5โ˜… quality, and a higher tier always sells for more. On top of that, catching plenty of one species builds up its own mastery ladder โ€” reach enough catches and it steps up from Novice to Expert to Master. Schneider is a good example: its mastery ladder needs 200 catches for Novice, 600 for Expert, and 1200 for Master, while its sell value climbs from 50 at 1โ˜… up to 400 coins at 5โ˜….

See the full fish database for every species' own mastery thresholds and sell values by tier.

Fishing Events: Shoals & Sea Fishing

A regular Fishing Event can trigger a Shoal โ€” a phase where fish gather thickly in one spot, making it easy to land several catches in quick succession before it passes. Sea Fishing is a separate, more limited event type built around open water: it's the only place sharks turn up, and they specifically come from a fish shadow that glows gold rather than a shadow's usual size-based coloring. Both event types can also roll a rarer "hidden phase" on top of their normal one, worth keeping an eye out for even if you can't force it to happen.

๐Ÿ’ก Once you're comfortable with regular fishing, Bill at the Fishing Village Square is the mentor to talk to about sea fishing specifically.

Fishing Achievements

Consistent fishing counts toward a handful of real achievements, from hobby leveling to Shoal-hunting to landing heavyweight catches.

Getting the Most Out of Every Cast

  • Cast onto the shadow itself โ€” a buoy that lands too far away barely improves your odds
  • Bigger and more unusually colored shadows (Gold, Blue) are worth prioritizing over a Small one
  • Watch the line color while reeling in โ€” ease off the moment it runs hot instead of forcing it
  • Keep fishing the same species to work it up through its Novice, Expert, and Master mastery tiers
  • Check in on Sea Fishing whenever it's running โ€” it's the only place sharks turn up
  • Fish during a variety of weather and times of day โ€” plenty of species only bite under specific conditions
